The WNBA kicks off its season tonight with unprecedented attention, sellouts and high ticket prices on the secondary market, and charter flights for its teams for the first time. The two-time defending champion Las Vegas Aces, led by last year’s Finals MVP A'ja Wilson, start their title defense tonight. But more eyes will undoubtedly be on Caitlin Clark’s debut, when her Indiana Fever play the Connecticut Sun at 7:30pm on ESPN2.
The women’s NCAA basketball tournament saw viewership records, with huge numbers for Clark’s games, and the WNBA draft was watched by 2.4 million people — a 307% increase from last year. Clark’s first game as a professional is up against the Knicks and Pacers in the NBA Playoffs tonight. With both games on cable and ESPN2 and TNT in about the same number of homes, tonight will be an interesting first test to see if the WNBA can continue the momentum from the NCAA Tournament.
In today’s newsletter, Jason is looking for trends to continue with the Knicks back at home against the Pacers and the Timberwolves on the road against the Nuggets. In MLB, Jack is tracking another solid start from Astros pitcher Ronel Blanco and the Angels’ chances to get out to a lead in the first five innings.
