1. Leading Off

If you needed any more evidence that parity is the story of this NFL season, last night’s Texans win over the Bills should do the trick. Buffalo was a 5.5-point road favorite and had reasserted itself as a Super Bowl contender after some fits and starts this year. Prior to the game the Bills were +800, just behind the Eagles at +500 and the Rams at +600.

Then Houston gave up just three points in the second half to the formerly high-flying Buffalo offense to get the 23-19 win and put the Texans right in the middle of the playoff race at 6-5 after an 0-3 start. Houston earned the upset with a backup quarterback.

After the loss, the Bills free-fell to +1200 to win the Super Bowl, tied with the Seahawks for sixth and behind the 5-5 Chiefs. The Rams and Eagles are now co-favorites to win the championship, with a significant odds gap between them and the next two teams, the Colts and Lions. Philadelphia is at Dallas this weekend and is favored by just 3.5 points over the 4-5-1 Cowboys, while the Rams have a Sunday Night Football showdown at home against the Buccaneers and are favored by a touchdown.

With 3 Straight Triple-Doubles, Jokic is Ahead of Last Season’s Rebound and Assist Averages

Nikola Jokic | Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images

Denver and Houston face off in a must-win NBA Cup game if either team wants to feel comfortable about advancing out of the group stage. Both are 1-1, where every team in the West’s Group C currently sits. Just a half-game separates the two teams in the overall standings, and the Nuggets have a 0.1-point better point differential. All that is to say, this should be a good one.

5. Overtime

In the News

  • CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones talked to NFL coaches and executives to figure out what is going wrong with the 5-5 Chiefs. The former Super Bowl favorites are 3.5 games behind the Broncos in the AFC West, though just one game out of a Wild Card spot.

  • After the fall of Penn State, the Big Ten’s schedule hasn’t been what it was expected to be this season and the SEC has dominated. That could change as Ohio State and Indiana head for a collision course, with the Buckeyes trying to end their losing streak against Michigan in between.

  • The NBA is off to a hot start viewership-wise, Tim Reynolds at the Associated Press reports, as “National NBA games being shown on NBC/Peacock, Amazon Prime Video or ESPN have drawn more than 60 million viewers through the first month of the regular season … the highest opening total in 15 years.”

  • Back-to-back American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal is in the final year of his contract with the Tigers, and ESPN reports he could exceed Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s record $325 million contract. Would the Tigers trade their ace if they know they can’t afford to re-sign him?
